The idea for Humanity Pods was conceived after being inspired by Paul Elkins, an amazing innovator of many different types of structures, campers, boats, bikes and survival ideas. The Nomad Bicycle Camper is what Humanity Pods are patterned after. Thanks to Paul Elkins, there are options for everyday folks to build this camper, as well as for those needing some basic housing.
The other inspiration came from my work at First Churches in Northampton, MA where I met and assisted many houseless people in need, seeking shelter, food, clothing, and referrals for financial help. What I also learned, is that oftentimes, habitually houseless people won’t or can’t abide by a life indoors, especially in settings that require adherence to a lot of rules and regulations. And, no matter how many people get placed in housing ever year in this area, there are still more houseless people than can be accommodated in the city shelter, requiring many people to sleep on doorsteps of local businesses, in tents all over the city, and in their cars. I personally, find that to be unacceptable and thus, the impetus of this project.
Thanks to the great talent among my friends, family, former staff, strangers who are now friends, other nonprofit organizations, and all of those in the community who have made a commitment to help me with this project!
