FAQs

1. Can a person sleep in this without worry of it being stolen while they’re in it?

The plan would be to also give the owner a chain lock that will go around the trailer hitch, bike, and lock to a pole or rack.

2. Will it be secure?

The ones in the video don’t show a solid door, but we plan to use something more sturdy with a lock both on the inside and outside.

3. Could it have a solar panel?

Yes, each pod comes with a small solar panel and light bulb that stores power. The plug from the panel will also charge an android phone or a small fan or heater that is rechargeable. These items will be up to the individual teams to add unless we receive enough donations to cover these kinds of items.

4. Are there any zoning restrictions?

They are on wheels, thus they conform to bike rules, not housing or vehicle regulations.

5. How will they be given out?

We plan to have an advisory board with several homeless folks helping to decide the application process. This has already been started.

6. Where can people park to sleep in them?

The plan is two-fold. First, we plan to solicit homeowners in all neighborhoods of Northampton, to sign on as “Pod Hosts.” These are generous folks who are willing to donate a portion of their yard for a “Podster” to park their pod and bike. Some may offer folks to leave their pod in a spot throughout the day, others may want it gone during certain times. Each owner will have their own rules that are agreed to by the podster.

The other hope is to have sections of city land, parks, and parking lots designated for parking pods. Veteran’s Field would be optimal, as it already has facilities and electricity. This idea has been brought to the Mayor’s attention, yet not sparked any interest just yet, but we are undeterred in our efforts to have the city join us in this effort.

6. How would a pod owner get help with problems or bike repairs?

We have already started talking to several area bike shops. There will be regular weekend hours through Pedal People for help on repairs, supplies, and training on how to maintain their bikes. Also, we’re working with bike shops to provide simple repairs free of charge.
